When does a wall actually need waterproofing rather than damp-proofing?

Whenever there is a realistic chance of a saturated soil zone against the wall — poorly draining or clay soils, a high water table, sloping sites that channel subsurface water, or any occupied or finished space below grade. Damp-proofing resists capillary moisture only. If water can build head against the wall, damp-proofing is the wrong product and no thickness of it will help.

Do I still need a drainage board and footing drain?

Yes, and this is the most important thing on this page. The membrane keeps water out of the wall; the drainage plane keeps water off the membrane by giving it a vertical path to the footing drain; the footing drain carries it away. Three different jobs. A perfect membrane on a wall with a silted footing drain still gives you a wet basement — through the slab.

How high should the membrane terminate?

Above finished grade, never at it. Terminating at grade guarantees a seam right where surface water concentrates. Carry it a few inches above final grade and mechanically terminate the top edge. And check the grading itself — a wall being loaded by a downspout or a slope toward the building is a surface-water problem you should fix before spending money below grade.

Does it bridge cracks?

At 300–400% elongation it bridges hairline shrinkage cracking and normal concrete movement without issue. It will not bridge a wall that is actively moving, bowing, or shearing — that is a structural problem and it has to be repaired first. Preparation & Application

What concrete profile does it need?

CSP 3–5 by shot blast or diamond grind. A formed or troweled surface is too closed for mechanical adhesion, and a form-released wall has an active bond breaker on it. Profiling also removes curing compound and laitance, both of which will fail cohesively under any membrane.

How long after the pour can I waterproof?

The wall must be cured enough that moisture vapor emission will not blister a non-breathable membrane. Test rather than assume — a green wall driving vapor outward will lift a coating regardless of how good the adhesion was on day one. On a tight schedule, talk to us about your specific mix, thickness, and conditions.

What do I do with snap-tie holes and honeycombing?

Strip the cones and patch the tie holes — a tie hole is a direct path through the wall and covering it is not the same as filling it. Fill honeycombing and bugholes; a membrane bridges a hairline crack, not a void. Grind form fins and offsets flat, because a sharp ridge is a thin spot in the membrane exactly where backfill will hit it.

Can it be applied to a block wall directly?

Not directly to open block face. Parge or block-fill first to create a continuous closed surface, then profile and prime. Spraying a membrane over raw block and raked mortar joints gives you inconsistent thickness and pinholing at exactly the mortar joints that are already the weak plane in the assembly.

How soon can I backfill?

Same day. Tack-free in under a minute and ready for protection board within the hour. That is the largest single operational advantage over sheet goods and asphaltic systems on an open excavation — it collapses a multi-day sequence and shortens your weather exposure.

Will the backfill damage it?

Badger Black is specifically tough enough for this service — 2,500–3,000 PSI tensile with 400–500 pli tear strength at 60–80 mil. That said, always run a drainage composite or protection board over it, place clean granular fill in lifts rather than dropping it, and keep bucket teeth off the wall. Most below-grade membrane failures are mechanical, not chemical.

Can this be used on the inside of a basement instead?

Exterior is always the correct location for waterproofing — it keeps water out of the wall assembly rather than managing it after it is already in. Interior coatings are working against hydrostatic pressure trying to push them off the wall, and they do nothing about freeze-thaw or salt damage within the concrete. Where excavation is genuinely impossible, interior drainage and sump systems are usually the more honest answer than an interior coating.

How does the cost compare to a sheet membrane?

Material cost is higher. Installed cost is competitive, because you eliminate lap detailing labor, corner and transition detailing, and the multi-day sequence — and you shorten the excavation open time, which on a real job site carries its own cost. The comparison that matters is total installed cost plus the risk of a callback on something buried under eight feet of fill.
