Below-grade waterproofing has three common approaches and each has a characteristic failure mode.
Sheet membranes — self-adhered rubberized asphalt or HDPE — are consistent in thickness because they are manufactured, but they are only as good as their laps and their adhesion to a real-world concrete wall. Fishmouths at laps, poor adhesion over dust or a green slab, and vulnerability at every inside and outside corner are the recurring issues. And a partially adhered sheet lets water migrate laterally behind it, which is why leak sources are so hard to find.
Fluid-applied asphaltics and modified bitumens are seamless but thin, slow to cure, temperature-sensitive, and easily damaged by backfill.
Polyurea is seamless, fully adhered, and cures in seconds. The two components mix at the gun and gel in three to six seconds, which means a vertical wall takes a full 60 mils in one pass with no sag and no waiting. Being 100% solids, there is no shrinkage — the wet mils sprayed are the dry mils that remain, including in the corners and at the cove where thin-film products always end up thinnest.
Badger Black is formulated for this service specifically. The properties that matter below grade are not just water resistance — they are tear strength and toughness, because the coating has to survive an excavator and a load of angular fill before it ever sees groundwater.

Concrete Preparation
Profile to CSP 3–5. Shot blast or diamond grind. A troweled or formed surface is far too closed for a coating to develop mechanical adhesion, and a form-released wall has an active bond breaker on it by design.
Remove form-release agents and curing compounds. These are engineered to prevent adhesion — that is their entire purpose. Profiling removes most of it; verify visually and by water-drop absorption.
Remove laitance. The weak, fines-rich surface layer on a green pour will fail cohesively under any coating, taking the membrane with it.
Check moisture vapor emission. A green or continuously damp wall drives vapor outward and will blister a non-breathable membrane. On new construction, allow proper cure. On remediation, understand where the moisture is coming from before you seal it.
Patch and detail before spraying. Strip snap-tie cones and patch the holes. Fill honeycomb and bugholes — a membrane bridges a hairline crack, not a void. Grind form fins and offsets flat; a sharp ridge is a thin spot in the membrane.
CMU block walls need a parge coat or block filler first. Spraying a membrane over open block face and mortar joints gives you a rough, pinholed surface and no consistent thickness where it matters.
What the Membrane Does Not Do
Being clear about this saves everyone a callback.
It does not replace the footing drain. A membrane keeps water out of the wall. It does nothing about the water table under the slab, and a silted or missing footing drain will still produce a wet basement through the floor. Drainage first.
It does not relieve hydrostatic pressure. A drainage composite or dimple board over the membrane gives water a vertical path to the footing drain instead of a wall to push against. That is a different function from waterproofing and both are needed on a wall with real head.
It does not fix structural movement. At 300–400% elongation the membrane bridges hairline cracking and normal shrinkage. It will not bridge a wall that is actively moving, bowing, or shearing at a cold joint. Structural repair comes first — and Concrete Mender is available where the concrete itself needs to be rebuilt before anything goes over it.
It does not fix grading. If the finished grade slopes toward the building, or downspouts discharge at the foundation, you are loading the wall on purpose. Fix the surface water before you spend money below grade.
